Can I use short term car insurance to get my car out of a police pound?
If your car has been impounded for any reason you will need to show, amongst other things, that you have insurance for it before you can collect it. A standard short term policy (which lasts between 1-28 days) will NOT be accepted by the police or pound staff, but there is a 30-day policy, which almost certainly will be. This is almost identical to a standard yearly policy but it is usually available for third party cover only. Can someone else collect it for me, instead?
If you are the owner of the vehicle you may be tempted to ask a friend, who has a car insurance policy which covers for vehicles not belonging, or hired, to that driver, to collect it for you instead. In the overwhelming majority of cases however these policies specifically exclude using them to take impounded cars out of a pound. It is necessary therefore for the person who brings it out to have a policy which is specific to that vehicle. Insurers, however, will not provide impounded car insurance to people who do not actually own the car so unless you are prepared to sell it to your friend you would have to collect it yourself.
How long does it take to buy insurance for a car that has been impounded?
A policy can, usually, be taken out very quickly and the policy documents can be emailed to you for immmediate use. If your vehicle was impounded a while ago you have to bear in mind that if you are not in contact with the pound within seven days there is a possibility that the vehicle will be taken away and scrapped, so you should let them know, as soon as possible, that you are arranging cover will collect the car as soon as possible. You will need to take down proof of ownership, such as the logbook or VO5, and be ready to pay the storage and impounding fees.
